PORTLAND -- A federal judge has sentenced a Portland man to more than four years in prison for using his graphic design skills to create high-quality fake identification documents for a team of identity thieves.

U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman also ordered 36-year-old Gregory M. Zimmerman to pay nearly $350,000 in restitution to his victims.

Zimmerman pleaded guilty last May to one charge of bank fraud, admitting he participated in the scheme from 2003 to 2006.

Prosecutors say the identity theft ring burglarized commercial office buildings in many U.S. cities, stealing checks, credit cards and personal information to defraud banks.
