PORTLAND -- A little bit of luck helped reunite a cat with its owners in Washington County this past weekend.

Patrick Gillett and Lisa Kinsley’s cat, Nico, went missing more than six months ago. They finally gave up their search and went to the Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter to look for a new cat to adopt.

"I thought it was unlikely she was still alive," said Gillett.

While at the shelter on Saturday, another couple arrived with a cat they had found a week earlier. That cat turned out to be Nico!

"My mind has been blown," said Gillett.

"I think we need to buy a lottery ticket," added Kinsley.

“If you saw this happen in a movie, you wouldn’t believe it. This was serendipity, or fate, or maybe just plain magic,” said animal services manager Deborah Wood. “We reunite about 1200 animals a year with their owners – but not like this. What are the odds of this happening?”

Nico was doing well.  She was scheduled for a quick surgery to fix a bladder issue.
