EUGENE, Ore. -- Ever since Hurricane Katrina, authorities in Lane County, Ore., have prepared for disasters with not only people in mind, but also their pets.
The Register-Guard says during Hurricane Katrina, people refused evacuation because rescuers declined to take their pets, abandoned pets stranded on rooftops or drowned in homes, and shelters filled with animals separated from their owners.
Since then, Lane County public agencies and groups have come up with emergency procedures to keep people and pets together during disasters such as fires or floods.
On Saturday Lane County's animal services and health and human services departments, the American Red Cross, and the Lane County Animals in Disaster Response Team gathered at South Eugene High School to practice those procedures.
