SALEM -- An Oregon Senate committee has approved four gun-control bills that would expand background checks and add new restrictions on carrying firearms.

The Senate Judiciary Committee passed the bills on a 3 to 2 party-line vote on Thursday. The package now goes to the Senate floor.

The bills would expand background checks to cover private sales, prohibit firearms in public buildings, allow school districts to ban guns on school grounds and require concealed handgun licensees to take an in-person training course.

Earlier this month, the panel held a marathon public hearing on the bills. The hearing drew emotional testimony from relatives of victims who died at the Clackamas Town Center shooting. It also drew strong opposition from the National Rifle Association.
