GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) -- Bob Maxwell was an infantryman in France in 1942 helping set up a command post, when it was attacked by German soldiers.

During the fighting he instinctively jumped on a grenade, protecting his fellow soldiers. The explosion cost him much of his right foot.

The selfless act of bravery earned him the Medal of Honor. At 93, he is the nation's oldest living recipient of the nation's highest military honor.

On Friday in Bend, where he lives, he will be presented a special commemorative set of postage stamps honoring the few surviving Medal of Honor recipients from World War II.

He says he feels his life was spared "by divine providence," because his life has a purpose. His focus in recent years has been working for veterans.
