SALEM -- Key Oregon legislators say budget cuts will not affect funding for seniors who get long-term care in their home, a nursing home or assisted living facility.
A budget compromise released this week would reduce state funding for the program. But legislators said Friday that they have identified other potential funding sources that they believe will fill the gap.
The savings are a key piece of a plan to cut $200 million in state spending to get the Oregon budget back in balance.
Legislative leaders agreed not to close prisons or cut funding for schools, but their plan would lay off State Police detectives and further tighten the belt on safety net programs for needy families.
The plan is still subject to approval in the full Legislature. Aides say Gov. John Kitzhaber would sign it.
