MILWAUKIE, Ore. – A detective with the Milwaukie Police Department was arrested Tuesday on domestic abuse charges.

Police said Thomas Garrett, 36, of Portland was accused of assault in the presence of children, which is a Class C felony.

The mother of Garrett’s one-year-old child told investigators that he attacked her in front of at least one of her four children, in her home in an unincorporated area of Milwaukie.

Garrett was arrested a short time later, while he worked his shift as a deputy.

The alleged victim, whose name was not released, has the infant with Garrett, as well as three other children who are not his biological children. Garrett is not married to the woman and they do not live together, according to detective Jim Strovink with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

“Garret was very cooperative during this arrest procedure and continued to be obliging with investigators while providing and consenting to a formal interview with the inquiring investigators,” Strovink said.

Garrett was booked in the Clackamas County Jail and bail was set at $15,000, which he posted a short time later.

He was scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on March 15th at 1:30 p.m.
