MILWAUKIE -- A Milwaukie High School graduate is in critical condition after his army unit came under attack in Afghanistan just months before he was to come home.

Alex Hussey, 21, was in Germany Friday in critical but stable condition. He lost portions of his legs and fingers after an IED exploded during his unit's patrol.

Hussey's family wants to make sure he knows his community's support is unwavering.

"So it's really been a crisis week for us as a family. But just the outpouring of support has been really tremendous on Facebook. Just the prayers, the thoughts, all the positive things people are saying about Alex," said Herb Stover, Hussey's Uncle.

Hussey went right into the army after graduating from Milwaukie High School. He was planning on moving with his fiancee later this year to North Carolina, but the attack changed his plans significantly.

Hussy's family is hoping he will be back in the country as soon as a few days from now.

"He has a long road to recovery but we are hopeful this won't define him, but that this will bring hope to other people as well," Stover said.

Family members set up a Facebook page where friends and strangers across the country are sending wishes and money to support him.
