PORTLAND – A man holding a dog was struck and killed on I-205 near Gladstone early Sunday morning. The dog was also killed, police said.
Eric Douglas Faircloth, 38, was on the north end of the I-205 bridge over the Clackamas River shortly after 3 a.m. when he and the dog were struck, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
A 65-year-old man was driving northbound on I-205 through a sweeping left curve over the Clackamas River bridge when he struck an unknown object in the left lane. The man pulled over and noticed he had run over a body, Hastings said.
One minute before police were notified about the incident, a 911 call reported that a person was holding a dog and lying in the left northbound lane, Hastings said.
Police do not know if this was a deliberate act by Faircloth. He was believed to be transient. His name was released after next of kin in Illinois were notified, Hastings said.
Two lanes were closed for about three hours during the investigation.
