LONGVIEW, Wash. -- The family of a student who collapsed during basketball practice at a Longview school Sunday has thanked the rescuers who saved his life.

Coach Bill Bakamus and Bill Brill performed CPR immediately after 16-year-old Spencer Best suffered cardiac arrest at Mark Morris High School. The men continued first aid until paramedics arrived and used a heart defibrillator.

Best's father said the boy was still in serious condition Tuesday, but he knows it could have been much worse.

"Tracy and I owe a debt of gratitude to those two gentlemen and the first responders for their quick actions that saved Spencer's life," Rich Best said.

Spencer was expected to remain in intensive care for at least a couple more days in the Randall Children's Hospital at Portland's Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.
