PORTLAND - New signs are meant to stop the upward trend in Portland suicides.

City leaders unveiled the signs Tuesday morning to refer people in a mental crisis to the "Lines for Life."

Officials say callers are not under a time constraint as operators try to make a personal connection and help them explore reasons for living.

The first new sign was posted on the Vista Bridge.

The project received $150,000 from the city council to hire more staff.
