PORTLAND – A man drowned in the Columbia River near Sauvie Island after he fell off a SeaDoo watercraft Saturday afternoon, deputies said.

Authorities said 39-year-old Scott Ankrom was too impaired to survive the fall from his watercraft even though he was wearing a life jacket.

Ankrom was pulled ashore shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told deputies that Ankrom was highly intoxicated while operating the watercraft, said Lt. Dustin Hald with Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found evidence of alcohol and marijuana that they believe to be contributing factors in the death, Hald said.
