PORTLAND -- It may just be the most photographed, certainly the most teased business sign in downtown Portland.
A Portland icon returned Thursday to Northwest Portland's Old Town district with the unveiling of the refurbished Hung Far Low restaurant sign.
The restaurant first opened in 1928, but moved several years ago out to SE 82nd and Division, where a number of Asian businesses have opened.
When the original sign went down in 2008 after roof repairs unveiled structural problems, the outcry went up.
More than $8,600 was raised through t-shirt sales, a donation website and special events. The Portland Development Commission provided about $45,000 in grants.
KPFF Engineers, R&H Construction and Security Signs coordinated the restoration and re-installation.
The original words "Chop Suey" have been brought back to replace "Est.1928" along with the word "Cocktails" coming back in place of "Building."
The Thursday event was especially moving for Bruce Wong, whose grandfather and father worked long hours in the restaurant, every day.
He thanked all involved with the restoration.
"They make me feel like I'm part of this city," he said.
