PORTLAND -- Racers crossed the finish line in the Hood to Coast relay Saturday in Seaside with a team from Tokyo taking first.

But it was teams like the "Soulful Brothers" who proved it's not about who wins. They finished with a host of other costumed participants in the walking category who were just looking to have fun.

Traffic from Mt. Hood to Seaside was slow  this weekend with more than 17,000 runners and about 3,800 volunteers taking part in the 31st Annual relay.

The Oregon Dept. of Transportation asked drivers to watch for runners and walkers, and to expect congestion because about 2,500 support vehicles followed the route.

Traffic on U.S. 26 was affected from Mt. Hood to Gresham Friday, starting at about 4:30 a.m. Later in the morning, traffic on U.S. 30 was slow from Portland to St. Helens. The race affected drivers on highways 47 and 202  Friday afternoon.

ODOT suspended construction projects in the area to minimize the congestion.

The race started at Timberline Lodge and ended on the beach, just north of the Broadway Avenue turnaround, in Seaside.
