PORTLAND -- Two homeless men shot while sleeping under the Morrison Bridge had been turned away from a shelter that same night, according to a newspaper report.

The Oregonian reported Friday that Carter Hickman and Allen Dean had tried to camp at the Right 2 Dream Too shelter in Old Town Tuesday night. They were turned away because it was full.

Early the next morning, the two men were shot.

Hickman remained in fair condition at OHSU Saturday, after being hit in the chest. Dean was released Friday.

A representative said the shelter turns away an average of 20 people per night to prevent overcrowding.
