PORTLAND – A flash-bang grenade exploded in a Portland officer’s hand during a training exercise Wednesday, but his injuries were only minor, according to police.

The injured officer’s name has not yet been released. Authorities said he is a 23-year veteran with the  SERT unit, which was training at the PPB facility in Northeast Portland when the accident occurred.

“The officer sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries to his hand,” said Sgt. Pete Simpson. “He was transported to the hospital for treatment.”

Simpson said investigators were working to determine whether the stun grenade malfunctioned and exactly how the incident occurred.
