PORTLAND -- Part of a popular dog park in Southwest Portland has been closed due to the spread of a parasite called giardia.

The winter off-leash area at Gabriel Park was gated off last week. Veterinarians said there has been an increase in dogs sick with the parasite and they were able to link at least a dozen of the cases to the park.

Giardia can be quite common. It spreads easily in feces and standing water. Symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting. Humans can also become sick from it.

The Portland Parks Bureau said they hope to re-open the off-leash area around April 12th after tracking the spread for a couple weeks.

Anyone whose dog may be sick was urged to contact a veterinarian and avoid visiting any dog parks.

Gabriel Park is located at 6820 SW 45th Avenue in Portland.
