PORTLAND, Ore. -- A former golfer traded in his clubs for cards during the cold snap earlier this month, spending nearly 30 hours playing poker online to raise money for Portland's homeless, according to the Oregonian.
Dusty Schmidt of Beaverton raised nearly $21,000 for the nonprofit agency Transition Projects by playing poker on his laptop for some 30 hours.
The paper reports that it was enough money to house three homeless people for six months, paying rent, providing furniture and basic supplies.

Schmidt said he got the idea from the 2000 Kevin Spacey movie "Pay It Forward."
