A former University of Oregon student from  Lynnwood, Wash., being held in a North Korean labor camp has asked authorities there for forgiveness.

Kenneth Bae, who attended the UO between 1988 and 1990, was found guilty in April of “hostile acts” against the North Korean government and sentenced to 15 years hard labor.

In a prison interview obtained by CNN, Bae said he is “coping well.”

“My hope is that North Korea will forgive and the U.S. will try harder to get me out speedily,” said Bae, in Korean.

The U.S. has asked North Korea to grant Bae clemency and allow for his immediate release.
