BANKS, Ore. -- A group of Oregon World War II veterans is searching for two flags that were stolen from a military memorial site in late April.
Army veteran Jim Bray was driving by the memorial site near Banks on April 24th when he noticed the flags were missing from the flagpole.
Bray called the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to report them stolen. The flagpole and a plaque had also been damaged in the vandalism.
One flag was an American flag and the other was a 10th Mountain Division Army flag that belonged to Bray’s friend and fellow veteran, Ed Flabetich.
“I'm just sad. It just makes you sick that these things go on,” Bray said.
Bray and Flabetich are both part of the Northwest Chapter of the 10th Mountain Division. The group helps maintain the grounds at the WWII memorial site, where dozens of trees are planted in honor of their fallen comrades.
Flabetich is still in disbelief over the crime. “We were brought up to respect," he said. "And when things like this happen, somebody has lost their respect.”
The veterans said they planned to dedicate the flagpole to the 10th Mountain Division on Memorial Day, but might have to delay the ceremony until they find replacement flags and fix the flagpole.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft. If you have any information, call 503-629-0111.
