CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Officials in Benton County are seeking to provide formal fire protection to a rural swatch of about 27,000 acres south of Corvallis.

But not everyone living in this sparsely settled area of scattered farms wants to be part of a fire protection district.

The Corvallis Times reports (http://is.gd/Xb1uQU ) that many of the area's farmers have makeshift firefighting equipment and have been providing their own fire protection. Some don't want to join a fire district because of the costs, while others say it won't necessarily save them on fire insurance because they'll still be miles away from a fire substation.

Some, however, say they would like to be annexed into a fire protection district.
