PORTLAND -- It was a Sunday service to remember when fire broke out at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Southwest Sunset Boulevard in Portland.
"Perhaps it's an overused joke, but it turned out to be a fire and brimstone sermon," said church member Bill Kinsey.
"I was preaching about Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement when the alarm went off," said Pastor Jeremy Watson.
The congregation evacuated safely, providing help to some of the older members in their 80's and 90's. There were also young children in a downstairs nursery and a Boy Scout troop also meeting downstairs at the time of the fire. The fire broke out inside an empty game room.
"We went to a second alarm because of the potential for a terrible fire," said Lt. Damon Simmons from Portland Fire.
Fortunately, the fire was contained to the game room and all 125 church members got out of the church safely.
Fire investigators were searching for a cause.
