PORTLAND -- Federal prosecutors confirmed Thursday that Logan Storm, convicted of child porn possession but awaiting sentencing, was captured in Mexico after he fled Oregon.
Mexican authorities captured Storm, 37, on March 12, months after he removed an ankle monitoring device and fled Oregon while awaiting his sentencing.
Storm was deported from Mexico and returned to the U.S. Thursday morning, according to Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Wahlstrom. He is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service in Houston, Texas.
"Storm denied his identity, claiming he was someone else," Wahlstrom said. But investigators were able to confirm his identity and he will be returned to Oregon at a later date.
In August of 2010, Storm was indicted for encouraging child sexual abuse after images of child pornography were discovered on his computer. He was later convicted of child porn possession. In addition, he was indicted by a Multnomah County grand jury and charged with two counts of sexual abuse for incidents in 2007. Storm now also faces a new federal indictment for failure to appear.
At a January 29 hearing, a judge ordered that Storm be monitored electronically instead of being held until his April sentencing. The next day his monitoring bracelet was found dumped at a Troutdale park.
His lawyers complained in court Thursday that they have been unable to communicate with him.
"Defense counsel has been unable to communicate with Mr. Storm," his lawyers Gerald Needham and Amy Baggio state in court documents.
They asked for a process to force defense and prosecuting attorneys to communicated openly about Storm's status and when he might be returned to the U.S. to continue the sentencing hearing disrupted by his flight.
An original sentencing hearing date of April 9 was pushed back and a new date will be set after Storm is back in Oregon.
Storm had been a teacher at Stoller Middle School before resigning in 2011. He was arrested later that year after returning to Portland on a flight from Amsterdam.
Storm's full name on the U.S. Marshal's wanted poster is Logan Burgess Jack Storm. He has used the aliases Burgess Jennings Hansen; Logan Burgess Storm and Logan Jack Storm.
