PORTLAND -- A memorial service was held today for Cleveland High School and Oregon Ducks tennis star Alex Rovello.

Rovello died last weekend in a drowning accident.

There's been an outpouring of sorrow from around the state and Saturday at St. Philip Neri catholic church in Southeast Portland they called him “ferocious" on the court but gentle off .

His friends say he was open and kind and just a good guy.

“He was the best. Everyone knows how good he was at tennis and you wouldn't know it if you talked to him about it. He was really humble about it and he was more about everybody else than himself,” said Rovello’s friend Sam Mendez.

In Rovello's honor, Oregon teams will wear a patch with an AR on it for the rest of the 2013 season.
