DUNDEE, Ore. -- A 17-year-old from Dundee was killed in a crash Saturday afternoon, police said.

Alex Neel Weiler lost control of his family's SUV on Northeast Fox Farm Road just after 5 p.m. and went off the road, crashing into a tree, said Captain Tim Svenson of the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office.

"Witnesses, a passerby and a Newberg/Dundee police officer arrived on scene within minutes and reported smoke and fire coming from the vehicle," Svenson explained. "Attempts were made to get the teenage driver out of the vehicle. However, their efforts were defeated by intense heat, smoke and flames."

Investigators said speed and slick road conditions likely contributed to the crash.
