EAGLE CREEK, Ore. – Deputies arrested a man Wednesday who they said killed his own dogs with an ax last November.

Japheth Stalcup, 25, reported his two family dogs, “Buddy” and “Jake,” were killed near his house last November, but had no idea who did it, said Lt. James Rhodes with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

After a three-month investigation, Stalcup eventually confessed to killing his dogs with an ax before dumping the bodies down an embankment behind his property, Rhodes said.

Stalcup told deputies he could not afford to care for the dogs and did not know of an alternative.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated animal abuse and initiating a false police report.
