PORTLAND -- A downtown Portland street was closed Monday morning due to reports of a suspicious package, which turned out to be a dead rat intended for an employee in an office building, fire officials said.
Portland Fire & Rescue's explosives disposal unit was called to the Standard Insurance Center, at 900 SW 5th Avenue, on reports of a suspicious package. Dispatchers said a hazardous materials team was also sent to the scene.
Southwest Taylor Street was temporarily closed between Southwest 4th and 5th avenues during the initial investigation. No evacuations were reported.
Dispatchers later confirmed that the package contained a dead rat, and it was meant for an employee inside the building. Fire officials said the was no danger to the public.
