PORTLAND -- A man suspected of drunken driving crashed his car in to a bicyclist on the St. Johns Bridge Friday evening, police said.

Portland police were called just after 6 p.m. to the report of a crash on the bridge, involving a bicycle and a small pick-up truck.

Responding officers and medical crews found the injured cyclist, 23-year-old James Fallon-Cote of Portland, lying on the bridge. He was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with traumatic injuries, according to Portland Police Bureau Sgt. Pete Simpson.

"Fallon-Cote was riding his bicycle westbound in front of Schwartz when he was struck and knocked up onto the hood and windshield of the truck," Simpson said.

He was last reported in fair condition.

Officers arrested 58-year-old Stephen Varney Schwartz at the scene and charged him with DUII, reckless driving, assault and criminal mischief.  Schwartz was released on his own recognizance and was given a future court date, according to the Multnomah County Jail.

The westbound lanes of the bridge were closed for several hours while investigators cleared the crash scene.
