PORTLAND -- Crews were called Monday morning to a fire in Northeast Portland, where the occupants of the home were able to escape without injury, officials said.

The fire was reported at about 11:15 a.m., near the intersection of Northeast Fremont Street and Williams Avenue, according to Lt. Rich Chatman of Portland Fire & Rescue.

Two men who rent the house were inside at the time. One of the men reportedly had to jump from a second-story window to escape the fire, but was not seriously injured.

Investigators determined the fire started on a couch in the living room, most likely due to careless smoking, Chatman said. The damage was estimated at $200,000.

Northeast Fremont Street was closed between Williams Avenue and Cleveland Avenue while police and fire officials investigated.
