PORTLAND – Crews helped an injured man off a large ship on Saturday afternoon.

Rescuers were called to 5500 North Channel Avenue on Swan Island at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. They boarded a ship in dry dock and were escorted to a man with severe head injuries, according to Portland Fire & Rescue Spokesman Tommy Schroeder.

After assessing the situation, crews made a plan to hoist the man out of the ship using ropes. But the man was able to walk up to the top deck with some assistance from crews. He was then lowered to an ambulance using a crane, Schroeder said.

The man was taken to Emanuel Hospital.
