PORTLAND – A Portland church is spreading the gospel to strippers through the power of baked goods.
Members of the Cedar Hills Baptist Church congregation are reaching out to exotic dancers, as well as others in the community, with sweet treats.
“We want to deliver a message of love, hope and transformation,” said Curtis Buthe, pastor of the Cedar Hills church. “It’s just a simple way of saying, ‘We care about you.’”
Next Sunday, the congregation will head to the Sunset Strip Gentlemen’s Club on Southwest Park Way to deliver desserts to dancers.
“Two years ago, we did this and we had some of our older ladies deliver the goodies,” Buthe said. “They let them come in, let them into the dressing room.”
Jim Harrison, the manager of Sunset Strip, said he thinks it’s a little funny but nice of the congregation to visit the strippers.
“They are trying to reach out to help out their community,” Harrison said.
Still, he’s not sure the women who work for him will be influenced by the church.
“Not everyone wants to work at McDonald's or the DMV,” Harrison said.
