PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The backers of what would be the first non-tribal casino in Oregon have gone to court hoping to show state officials were wrong to keep their measure off the November ballot.

Two developers want to open a casino near Portland, but the state constitution would prohibit that.

Secretary of State Kate Brown said Tuesday the developers didn't have enough valid signatures for an amendment to allow the casino.

The developers say they filed suit Wednesday seeking access to the signatures that were rejected. They say they're sure Brown's office made errors.

Meanwhile, a measure to continue allocating a share of state lottery proceeds for parks and fish and wildlife habitat was approved for a statewide vote. It had about 3,000 more signatures than needed.

I'm all for competition--put a casino in Portland with private ownership & let the business with the best programs draw the customers. Jobs are welcome in PDX for all skill sets - although more professional level jobs are needed.

tom, you should seriously consider leaving Oregon. You might be happier in Idaho or Wyoming where life is a little simpler. I'm 100% for casinos. They generate money and create jobs. They're crappy jobs that native whities won't want, but they're jobs. And casinos only ruin the people that gamble too much. We're all adults. Just please do it environmentally responsibly. And follow the rules, which cons don't seem to like to do. The rules to get a measure on the ballot weren't made up special for the developers. They should have started earlier and worked harder. Now they want to sue. Tomorrow, they will be back to criticizing all the expense of litigation and how the USA is a sue-happy country. Hypocrites. Put a casino right on Lake O. I'd still rather go to Vegas.

I live in Gresham and I don't want to see this casino built in this area. I think we should put it in Lake Oswego where one of the developers live.

Amending the State Constitution in order to permit nontribal casinos? What has Oregon come to?

We don't need a casino there so people can spend money they don't have and contribute to their addictions. Why don't they put in a malibu gran prix track, putt-putt course, water park and a game center for family's to spend quality time and give people of ALL AGES something to do.
