PORTLAND -- Scattered showers and temperatures in the mid 40s greeted commuters Monday morning and the thermometer will drop as the day continues, according to KGW meteorologist Nick Allard.

Temperatures will drop into the upper 30s by Monday evening, he said, The Cascades could see a foot of new snow overnight Monday and a few inches in the Coast Range.

There may be scattered snow showers in the higher elevations around Portland Monday evening, he said, but that wil be the last of the moisture. Expect clear and cold temperatures through mid-week.

An early-evening heavy band of rain  moved into the metro area Sunday, bringing southwest winds blowing 15-35 mph.

On Highway 26 near Warm Springs, a semi trailer flipped over on the shoulder of the road. It wasn't immediately clear what caused the truck to topple over, but winds were gusting around 50 mph along the stretch of roadway.

According to AAA, more than a third of Thanksgiving holiday travelers return the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

Portland International Airport saw an estimated 298,000 people shuffling through its gates Sunday. The returning crowds also caused some traffic headaches with freeways packed with cars.

On Saturday night, some people at PDX were returning home a little early to save a few bucks.

“We kind of got our tickets late. It was going to be $300 or $400 to stay the weekend if we could,” said Marilee Murdock.
