PORTLAND, Ore. -- A six-year-old boy fell from a second story window and landed on the sidewalk outside his Portland home Saturday. The accident happened on Henninger Lane in NW Portland.
The child was rushed to Legacy Emanuel hospital and is reportedly doing fine.
Neighbors KGW spoke with said the incident was a good reminder of the dangers windows can pose to kids.
Seven-year-old Riley Marshall knows window screens keep bugs out, but don't keep kids in.
“If you press on it really hard you can actually go flying out the window,” said Marshal.
“We've taught our children, ’Hey let's not open the windows all the way, let's keep the blinds down...you may look but don't touch,’ that type of thing,” said Riley’s dad Tim. “Just making sure they don't hurt themselves accidentally.”
Each year 50 children in Oregon are admitted to hospitals after falling out of second story windows.
Since 2009, two children have died from falling out of windows. Experts say if you have small children you should use window stops on second floor windows to keep them from opening more than four inches, keep furniture away from the windows and, if a child falls, don't try to move him or her, but call 9-1-1 immediately.
