PORTLAND -- A Ross Island Sand & Gravel tug and barge sank in the Ross Island lagoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The company called the Coast Guard abut 7 a.m. to report the sinkings. The 100-foot barge and small tender tug both sank in shallow water, according to Petty Officer Luke Potter.
There were several hundred gallons of fuel on the tug but only a few gallons spilled. Booms were put around the tug and barge to try and contain the fuel, Potter said.
It's unclear how the tug and barge sank, but there were no signs of foul play, Potter said.
