PORTLAND -- A St. Helens man pulled over along the roadway and flagged down a police officer Saturday when he realized his wife would likely give birth before they could get to the hospital.
Paramedics were dispatched just after 7:30 a.m. to a report of a woman in labor at the side of Highway 30, near the St. Johns Bridge, according to Tim Seidel with American Medical Response.
The couple was on the way to Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center to deliver their third child and knew the boy wouldn't wait. Medics arrived at 7:40 a.m. to assess the woman and get her into the ambulance.
Paramedics delivered the baby boy in the ambulance 15 minutes later.
"The baby was in good condition and around seven pounds or so," Seidel said. "Our crew was very excited. These calls are such a happy occasion."
The woman and her baby were taken to the hospital without further incident, he said.
Gillian Gates, one of the AMR paramedics, said "it was perfect. Mom couldn't have done a better job. It was textbook."
