PORTLAND -- A power outage at TriMet substations disrupted MAX service again Monday evening on the west side.

Blue and Red Line trains between the Beaverton and Sunset transit centers were affected by the latest outage around 6 p.m. It was restored at about 6:45.

MAX service across the Steel Bridge was expected to be restored by 8 p.m.

Service was halted for about three hours Monday morning.

Trains were able to continue running throughout most of the suburbs, but were unable to complete the trip into the downtown core.

TriMet said crews found a failed component at the top of an overhead power pole where a surge arrester had shorted.

“Think of it like a surge protector that your computer is plugged into. If a surge comes into the wire, the surge protector prevents it from harming the computer,” TriMet spokesperson Roberta Altstadt said.

Service was initially restored about 9 a.m., but shuttle buses were still required between Old Town and the Rose Quarter across the Steel Bridge as of 4 p.m.

The outage also affected the Portland streetcar system for a short time.
