PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Public Schools Superintendent Carole Smith submitted her proposed budget for the 2010-2011 school year Monday, which included a dip into the district's savings to avoid "drastic" cuts that were required in 2009.
Smith said she intends to use $14 million from reserve funds to meet the $445 million budget for the upcoming school year. She said this would be accomplished while still preserving small kindergarten class sizes, specialized reading and writing programs for kids in need, teacher staff levels and without cutting any additional school days.
The superintendent told KGW she hoped to have the budget finalized and approved by June.
Smith did not address the pending high school realignment.
More on the budget process was available at the PPS website and a public hearing was scheduled for April 12th.
