COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) — A sport fisherman jumped into the ocean to rescue a man whose boat had overturned half a mile south of the Coos Bay jetty.
Travis Wendelin of Coos Bay was fishing on Wednesday near Baltimore Rock with his father when they saw the only other nearby boat overturn.
Wendelin says they started up their boat, radioed a distress call, motored out and found the man trapped. Wendelin jumped in the water, swam to the man, who appeared to be about 70 years old, and cut him loose from the rope that had trapped him.
On their way back to shore, the Coast Guard arrived and took the man onto their boat, administered first aid and got him medical help on shore. Authorities have declined to give the man's name or condition.
