EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Businesses in Lane County have received award notices that may be a someone's scheme to get companies to purchase plaques.
The Eugene Register-Guard reports businesses have received a letter from the "US Commerce Association" saying they've been selected for the "2009 Best of Eugene Award."
The letter does not contain any contact information, but does direct recipients to a Web site where a press release and a form to order plaques is found. The letter says the organization works with local businesses, trade groups and chambers of commerce among.
Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce president Dave Hauser says his organization has never had any contact with the US Commerce Association.
The Better Business Bureau says the letters are not for a genuine award program, but for a scheme to get companies to pay for vanity plaques.
