Fine time to spot whales off the Oregon Coast

DEPOE BAY, Ore. (AP) — Trained volunteers will be at 24 sites along the Oregon Coast to help visitors spot whales.

The whale-watching sites range from Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach to Harris Beach State Park in Brookings. Volunteers will be at the sites from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. between Saturday and Jan. 1.

Marine mammal experts estimate that 18,000 gray whales and 1,100 humpback whales pass the Oregon Coast at the peak of their migration south to the waters off the Baja Peninsula.

Morris Grover, an Oregon State Park ranger, advises watchers to bring binoculars and dress in layers.
