On Civil War day, Oregon duck gets painted orange

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — Albany police say that on the day of the Civil War football game this week, a duck was found spray-pointed orange, the color of the Oregon State Beavers. Its legs were bound with duct-tape.

The Oregon Ducks won the game Thursday, and the male mallard has survived.

But the Albany Democrat-Herald reports the duck will spend the winter at a wildlife rehabilitation center near Corvallis, home of the Beavers.

Jeff Picton of the Chintimini Wildlife Center says the duck can't be set free because the paint destroyed the water-repellent qualities of its feathers. It couldn't swim.

And, Picton says, removing the paint would do more damage than leaving it on. So, the center will wait until the duck molts and grows new feathers.
