OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) — A parking meter officer in Oregon City is facing aggravated theft and computer crime charges after used vehicle advertisements on the Internet turned out to be phony.
Gary Anthony Stewart was arrested Monday after an investigator for Key Bank contacted the Clackamas County sheriff's office about a pickup truck listed for sale on Craigslist.
Deputies said a Key Bank account belonging to Stewart had received four electronic wire transfers for just under $10,000 in the same day.
One victim told investigators she wired $9,700 for a 2006 sport utility vehicle before her bank in Washington state informed her the Internet ad was fraudulent.
Deputies said the 40-year-old Stewart has worked for Oregon City for two years as a civilian code enforcement officer for parking meters.
