Temps up 4 degrees since 1958, reducing NW snowpack

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Scientists report that rising temperatures appear to be responsible for cutting the snowpack in Oregon's Cascade Range in half over the past 77 years.

The report from Oregon State University released Tuesday found that the warming trend is seen most in the spring. Temperatures are up almost 4 degrees since 1958 in January, March and April.

Meanwhile, there has been no significant trend in precipitation.

Geosciences professor Julia Jones says the shrinking snowpack has been the most visible impact of global warming, and will continue into the future.

The mountain snowpack acts as a natural reservoir for rivers that are crucial to salmon, farming and ranching.

What a crock! Everything from snow pack to the recession to grandma's gout is on Global Warming. Give me a break.

I keep hearing that we have been going through a warm weather trend for a number of years (like 30 ) and that it is supposedly changing over the next 30 years back to cold again, so I am sure it has something to do with that. I do think global warming is something to be concerned with but I agree with you tyler, too many things get blamed on it that probably aren't the real reason.

The warming is a normal cycle and in 2012 the cycle will be complete.

Its not a crock, snowpack is down from where it once was. That is scientific fact. If you notice, the terms global warming and climate change are never even used in this article. However, I would like to know why they used the year 1957. Is it because that is the coldest year they could find or something? If they used 1955 would the temp be up 4 degrees as well?

Ummm..."Geosciences professor Julia Jones says the shrinking snowpack has been the most visible impact of GLOBAL WARMING, and will continue in the future." Sounds like a mention of the hoax to me...

I really don't understand people so ignorant they can not accept someone who goes out and collects data and reports the results. I have been skiing on Mt Hood for nearly 50 years and it is my personal observation the snow pack is less. I have the photographs to prove it. Comments left here are by truly ignorant people, who would believe the world is flat or the sun revolves around the earth, because that is what their "senses" tell them, rather than conducting close study of nature to reveal the true that is hidden from our eyes. They probably believe the earth is only 7,000 years old and life springs from a pile of old rags in the corner of the barn.

The current warming cycle is a fact (50 and 100 year studies agree on this, and there is no real scientific debate on the issue). Human causation is the issue that is debated hotly. I know that isn't what either the conservative or liberal pukes want to hear, but that is the truth.

Since the Nazi's at KGW for some strange reason deleted my post I will just have to say dynamited777 has it the nail on the head. Good post.

This is no longer an issue that needs debate, we have proof that human industrialization and activities are the cause of these breaks with trends. Statistics can be used to change any decision, however your not using sound science if you rely on energy industry science that says what they want it to say. We know for a fact that glaciers are shrinking, snow pack is shrinking. We know for a fact that CO2 concentrations are much higher then they should be. Your working against us all by doubting these concrete facts. With this sort of thinking we'd still be using CFCs and making holes in the Ozone layer. Get over it people, we all going to have to make changes. I'm sorry if that will make your Exxon stock go down, but change is necessary.

Perfect example of local climate change: I was just reading that in the 1920s and earlier, the Columbia and Willamette Rivers routinely froze (as in you could walk across to Vancouver or from eastside to downtown).

himhandy said on November 25, 2009 at 10:43 AM

Wow that would be weird to see the Columbia and Willamette fozen over. Humans impact this earth more then we want to think.

It's just that everyone is getting a little tired of the other bs lying so called scientists (that have just been exposed as lying fools), which makes it hard for the real, honest hard working people like Julia Jones to promote her findings.

Average temp is determined by the temps over the last 30 years. Not much time really considering the age of the Earth. Global warming theory - uses last 1,000 years for its base model. Global cooling theory - uses last 1,000,000 years for its base model. The Earth has been warmer and it has been cooler. That's what it does. Are we helping it get warmer? Yes. Are you willing to really sacrifice in order to change it? By all of the lawsuits, my bet is NO.

gonefishin said on November 26, 2009 at 10:14 AM

But who has the guts to make the hard sacrifices and make hard decisions? NO ONE!!!!! Air is cooler around water, so... Refill the 100,000 acres drained from Tule Lake. Refill the other lakes we've drained. Put in new solar, wind, and nuclear plants. Stop the lawsuits about un-natural shade in the desert, birds getting killed, and the fear that something MIGHT happen. You can cry for change and then want life to be the same. Change requires sacrifice. Politicians won't suggest the hard sacrifices, because the news media and those directly affected will crucify him/her.
