BEND, Ore. -- An 80-year-old man died early Friday when he was struck by a train in Central Oregon.
The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office says the train consisting of a locomotive and 13 flatbed cars struck Normand Gaudet of La Pine as he lay on the tracks shortly after midnight. Gaudet died at the scene.
Sgt. Dan Swearingen says the speed of the train was consistent with railroad policy and its crew sent warning blasts.
Highway 97 was closed for about 90 minutes because the train blocked the southbound lane when it stopped.
The investigation remains active.
