SILVERTON, Ore. – Five horses and several dogs, suffering from exposure and lack of food, were seized from a field near Silverton Friday.

Investigators said the horses were malnourished and were not covered to protect against below-freezing temperatures.

The dogs were found in a horse stall with minimal protection from the elements.  They included three Australian Shepherds, several Dachshunds and some puppies.

A caller reported Thursday that the horses were left by their owners in a field outside of Silverton.

Deputies, working with volunteers from two horse rescue organizations, removed the horses from the field Friday morning. Their body conditions were estimated between 1 and 3 on a scale of 9, in which 1 is the worst condition.

Investigators learned the horses’ owners had been out of state, and they had arranged for a neighbor to feed and care for the horses. They had agreed to send money for food, but the neighbor said no money was sent and there were no funds to feed the animals.

The horses were taken to two rescue facilities, where they will receive care.

Deputies found temporary housing for the dogs and puppies. Volunteers were taking care of them.

No criminal charges were filed. The names of the owners were withheld as the investigation continued.
