COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) — Coquille police say a young man broke his leg after stepping into a beaver trap near Sturdivant Park.

Police Chief Janice Blue told The World newspaper of Coos Bay (http://is.gd/9pVVkK ) that the man's dog got loose and he was trying to retrieve it when he stepped into the trap Sunday.

Passers-by responded to the man's screams for help. They called 9-1-1, and a firefighter with bolt-cutters eventually freed him.

Chief Blue says beaver dams have caused flooding in the area, and a trapper had permission to set the trap in the marshy area.

Trapping seasons are underway across Oregon, and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife reminds people to be careful when hiking.
