EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The Eugene School District will not apply for a federal grant that could have netted the district about $6 million because the teachers' union declined to sign off on the grant application.

The Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/17B0p09) the money would have funded a college and career readiness program.

The president of the Eugene Education Association teachers' union, Tad Shannon, said the grant was a great idea in theory, but in practice would have required teachers to spend more time away from the classroom for professional development.
