TACOMA - A man suspected of walking through a Tacoma neighborhood and firing shots at homes was taken into custody just before 9 p.m. Tuesday after a standoff with police at his residence.

No one was hurt.

Gas canisters were fired inside the man's home in an effort to get him to surrender. Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer says he was identified by neighbors, has mental health issues and may have been drinking today.

The Sheriff's Department responded to a dozen 911 calls about a man walking in the 5800 block of 13th St. Ct. NE in the Browns Point area firing shots at residences around 4pm.

Troyer said the suspect, a 67-year-old man known to have substance abuse issues, was seen pointing guns at people and firing randomly. Several homes were hit.

Many people were evacuated from their homes. Residents that remained at home were asked to stay inside their homes. Several neighbors were found hiding in their garage. They said the suspect fired at them several times.

The man was believed to have four high-power assault weapons. Troyer said the man crashed his car last week in a DUI accident.
