CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. (AP) — An official says a Cave Junction City Council candidate initially thought to have been disqualified from winning a write-in election with 7 out of 62 votes cast could wind up in the position.
City Recorder Ryan Nolan said county officials notified him Monday that John Gardner is a registered voter. But Nolan said the Cave Junction council will have to determine whether Gardner meets the requirements of the city charter — that he is registered and has been a city resident for a year.
If the council decides Gardner doesn't meet the requirements, Nolan said the position will be considered vacant, and the council will appoint a new member.
Gardner was the top vote-getter in an election that had a five-way tie for second place — each with three votes.
